Each class roughly corresponds to the minimum writing speed of the card in MB/s (megabytes per second). Therefore, a Class 2 microSD memory card has a minimum writing speed of 2MB/s, a Class 4 has a minimum writing speed of 4MB/s, etc. HD videos require a minimum of a Class 4 card.

Compatibility Is Important.

When choosing a microSD card, compatibility is vital to consider. Not all SD cards work across all devices, and it’s important to consider the BUS speed of the device you’ll be interfacing the SD card with. Why? Because your microSD card could be “insta-fast,” but if the BUS of the device you’re interfacing with can’t keep up, all of that super speed is wasted.

The standard SD card is slower than the SDHC and SDXC cards. The SDXC offers the highest speeds and the lowest compatibility. The SD card is the slowest but most widely compatible card, followed closely by the SDHC & SDXC. it is best to use faster microSD cards. Above all, slower SD cards can become overheated and fail. The Three Different Types of Memory Storage Cards

Storage cards are something just about all of us buy. Whether we need extra memory storage on our mobile devices or for our digital camera, SD cards are the way to go. But did you know that these highly compact and efficient flash storage cards are available in three different types? In fact, each type caters to the needs of the user.

Memory Storage Cards

Type 1: The SD Card.

You know what’s great about classics? They’re original. There is something to be said for that very first, original creation. The SD card was the very first storage card. It was created in 1999 with a maximum storage capacity of 2GB, which was huge back then. It used Microsoft’s FAT-12 or FAT-16 file format.

Type 2: The SDHC Card.

Sometimes improvements are a good thing, and this was certainly the case when the second type of SD card, the SDHC, made its debut in 2006. By this time, the Internet was a global force. The SDHC is a high capacity version of the original SD. It is capable of storing up to 32GB of data. It uses Microsoft’s FAT-32 format. But as quickly as this super storage device came out, our storage needs rose yet again.

Type 3: The SDXC Card.

An 16GB to 32GB card is big enough for most portable memory purposes. However, some choose to opt for a 64GB to 128GB card just to have extra space. Tip #1: Make backups of important files.

The best ways to backup important files is to write them to a brand new USB flash drive that is only used for backup purposes. Store the flash drives in a safe place, such as a weatherproof steel storage container.

Tip #2: Organize your data in such a way that you can quickly backup what is most important.

You never know when a device may show warning signs of corruption. By keeping your data organized, you can quickly and easily backup your most important files at the first sign of trouble. Spend the extra time, and money on high speed highly rated storage drives.

Tip #3: Research data transfer speeds for the storage device(s) you purchase; it saves time and allows for faster backups.

Many office desks are designed for a computer tower to reside on the floor near legs and feet or behind a door. Make sure the plug-in point for your external device is far enough away that you won’t accidentally kick or nudge the device by something as simple as swiveling your chair. If the tower is behind a closed door, ensure the door is open and secure when using a device. A heavy desk door suddenly slamming shut can irrevocably damage both the device and port. So many times people drop or move laptops with USB drives plugged into the port, avoid this and be very careful, many are bent and damaged and no longer recognized!

Tip #7: Use proactive software protection and anti-malware to scan for and remove untrusted software.

We transfer files across devices so often that it’s easy to pick up an unwanted traveler. A virus or malware can wreak havoc on any device and jeopardize your data. Regularly scan all devices for and remove untrusted software to prevent attacks.

Tip #8: Do not place untrusted files onto portable storage drives, such as USBs and external hard drives or SSD drives; this may spread an infected file to many locations.

When in doubt, don’t move it about. It’s a good rule of thumb to live by if you want to keep your data safe. Untrusted files can damage devices and make data recovery tricky. If you’re ever unsure of a file, don’t move it onto any portable storage drive.

Tip #9: Store data within systems that allow password protection to prevent theft or unwanted attacks.
