What Can go Wrong?

There are many situations that can lead to an iPhone failure. Here are some of the most common:

iPhone Water Damage.

This is one of the more common issues we see at eProvided. Salt water damage to smartphones can really put a damper on your day. Water works its way through the circuitry on your iPhone and causes corrosion. This corrosion leads to connections becoming lost or deteriorated. Brackets and cables become badly damaged due to oxidation. The logic board which stores the most critical parts like the NAND wafers and controller chips usually short circuits. eProvided goes straight to the NAND wafers or these logic boards in order to solve the problem with lost data. iPhone data recovery is possible and a savior in salt water damage situations.

iOS Upgrade Failure.

Many consumers attempt iOS upgrades and fail miserably. One leading cause is due to a ‘Insufficient Storage’, “Stuck on Update Requested’ or ‘Update Failed’ error messages. At this point the user becomes confused and starts deleting crucial files. Prevent data loss, read online guides such as this one you are reading now. Be sure to take your time and do it correctly to avoid losing your files.

My iPhone was Dropped.

Oops, dropping your iPhone causes cracks and dings and data loss. Many times you might be out of warranty or not have insurance on your iPhone or smartphone. When you do not have this protection and have no proper backups you will need assistance from a professional file retrieval service. Worst case scenario, if you need an iPhone data recovery service feel free to contact eProvided.

iPhone Hardware Failure.

Excessive heat on an iPhone (or any smartphone) can cause risk to your files. Be sure to read up on the best ways to prevent overheating of your cellular device. Normal operating temperatures are between 32°F and 96°F. When storing your device, keep the range between -4° and 113°F. Humidity causes data loss, if it’s extreme and constant, five percent to 91 percent is considered normal.

iPhone Jailbreak Failure.

Jail-breaking your iPhone is not a great idea. If you do jail-break your phone and something goes wrong you will need assistance.  Don’t make matters worse, call the iPhone data recovery experts at eProvided.Com. Your simcard might experience problems. You might experience a ‘No Service’ issue. When this happens and you need your data and can’t access any of your important files let eProvided help.

The above scenarios seem catastrophic, however as long as the NAND wafer within the iPhone isn’t damaged, your data still has a chance to be recovered by an expert.

NAND Wafer used in iPhone Data Recovery. Contact eProvided, your iPhone Data Recovery Experts!

Standard iPhone NAND Wafer.

iPhone Data Recovery. Why is an Expert Often Times Needed?

iPhone’s store data using NAND flash memory. In the case that your iPhone fails, a data recovery expert will need to access this NAND flash chip in order to recover the data. If your iPhone turns on but you’re unable to navigate or it freezes, eProvided has solutions available that will help.

Our Experience with Data Recovery Software.

If the data is important to you, it is best to avoid recovery programs and send your device in to an iPhone Data Recovery Expert immediately. Software when incorrectly used, has the potential of doing more harm. Many ‘free’ recovery programs will only allow you to “preview” your recovered files, they’ll charge you to access them. This may cost you more than sending it to a data recovery expert in the first place.

Tips to Avoid Damaging your iPhone.

The iPhone is an extremely durable phone that can handle a lot of abuse. Still, the iPhone does have it’s vulnerabilities and can be damaged, resulting in data loss. Otterbox Smartphone Cases are an excellent way to protect your iPhone from drops, as well as potential water damage. As for hardware failures, they will happen and sometimes for no real rhyme or reason. If you do find yourself in one of these unfortunate situations, reach out to us! We’d love to help!

Thumb Drive Recovery, Tips to Avoid Damaging your Flash Drive.

Tips for Consumers, Using Thumb Drives with Care.

eProvided Thumb Drive Recovery Tips, Prevent Damaging Your Flash Drives and Breaking Your Own Storage Devices.

Many of us today use thumb drives on a weekly basis. Thus, using USB flash drives haphazardly, without guidance will cause damages to your data and photos. Thumb drive recovery is avoidable by following a few safety tips. If you experience USB damage or breakage and need a thumb drive recovery specialist, eProvided is here to help. eProvided is in business over 19 years.

NAND Flash Memory Based Thumb Drives.

Before getting into industry tips we learned over the past 16+ years, let’s talk about the USB drives directly. Flash drives, thumb drives and flash memory are memory sticks which store data. You might call them a storage device or even a hard drive.

The most common USB devices use NAND flash memory chips. These NAND flash based devices have printed circuit boards (PCB) with various circuits baked onto the board. You’ll find fuses, capacitors and crystals on-board. These circuits control data transfer and communications. Avoiding thumb drive recovery, one must understand the differences between these devices. To keep USB flash drives safe from broken tips, bends and other damage please educate yourselves. Expect data loss without proper care.

About Monolithic Thumb Drives.

Flash drives, AKA: thumb drives, memory sticks, etc. are also produced in a single self contained epoxy wafer. Industry flash drive manufacturers call them COB’s (chip on board [COB] flash drives).

During manufacturing, producers layer the circuits to create one single unit.  Many consumers referred to these products as monolithic USB flash drives. There are two types of flash drives produced (monolith based and NAND flash based). These two types are distinct and unique. Monolithic based memory sticks are commonly damaged by snapping the USB tip off or bending the USB storage device. They are more susceptible to serious damage due to their structure. These are self contained chip on board products. Thumb drive recovery companies will have a much tougher time as the entire device is one single square unit. You will not find removable NAND wafers on this type of product.

What if You Need a Thumb Drive Recovery Company?

Following a few very simple rules will prevent data loss from damaged or broken USB devices. Now that you know about the two types of memory sticks produced, let’s talk about purchasing the right flash drive. This will save you time and money.

Stop Damaging Flash Drives, Prevent Data Loss. Contact us at eProvided, a Thumb Drive Recovery Company Based in Parker Colorado, USA.

Questions, Contact eProvided, a Worldwide Thumb Drive Recovery Company in Colorado. Stop Damaging Flash Drives.

When you purchase a thumb drive use a reputable source, avoid eBay. Furthermore, many eBay sellers sell fake USB drives. Likewise, contact Best Buy or NewEgg. eProvided primarily uses these two merchants for purchasing recovery drives. Generally they’re used for recovered data on successful cases. Both of these companies have a toll free number. Similarly, they call it a pre-order customer service phone number. Above all, ask what products specifically are not Monolithic based. Tell them you want a USB device that’s build with NAND flash wafers. NAND flash wafers can be removed by thumb drive recovery companies such as ourselves (eProvided.Com). Removing NAND flash chips takes much less work and costs a bit less.

Tip #1. Prevent Bending The Tip of Your Own Thumb Drive.

Prevent kicking your thumb drive by accident. Be cautious inserting your USB thumb drive into your computer at the floor level. eProvided sees many cases where a consumer bumps the flash drive by accident, breaking the tip off the USB port. Similarly, another common cause for damaging your USB disk drive. If your storage device is plugged into a laptop be careful not to move your computer around. In addition, by moving your laptop you’re susceptible to breaking off the tip while it’s inserted in the PC.

Tip #2. Thumb Drives and Washer Machines.

You laugh but this is common. To illustrate, many thumb drive recovery cases begin in the washer machine. For instance, remember to remove your flash drive before it goes into the washer machine. In other words, water damage and salt water damages thumb drives and causes serious file retrieval scenarios. Finally, avoid going into the pool with a memory stick.

Tip #3. Flash Drives, Dogs and Puppies Damage.

Dogs damage thumb drives by the strong grasp of their mouths. Puppies love your homework. This excuse is real, we see it all the time. Do not leave any flash memory stick near a curious dog. Prevent puppies from damaging your hard work, keep puppies away from flash drives. Dogs cause serious damage, many times cracking NAND wafers with no chance of a success at data recovery.

Tip #4. Memory Sticks and G Forces. E=MC2, Remembering Albert Einstein.

eProvided recovers data for NASA JPL space missions. Specifically, in one case the Helios spacecraft crashed in the Pacific ocean. It was under salt water for a few weeks. Above all, we had a success, luckily, as there was global environmental data on this craft that’s very important to us all. We’re pleased they retrieved their files using eProvided thumb drive recovery services.

eProvided now consults for JPL /NASA to help prevent data loss from any type of memory drive or flash based media. With this in mind, G forces are everywhere in life. Thus, you may be in a car crash and your USB flash drive experiences high G forces. Next, keep your flash media sticks in a safe compartment when traveling. Subsequently, your storage device will become damaged, think ahead.

Discovering problems with a thumb drive? Namely a ‘The disk in drive D is not formatted’, or it’s unrecognized message pops up. Take it to data recovery specialists. At eProvided, our experienced team will assess the problem and do whatever they can to retrieve your data.

Power Surge? Safely Checking Devices for Data Loss after Electrical Spikes.

Data Recovery Specialists Discuss How Hard Drives and USB Drives Suffer from Power Surges.

Power Surges and Electrical Spikes Damage USB Disks and Hard Drives.

Have you ever accidentally shut down your computer or storage device (tablet, smartphone, pda) in the middle of something important? Have you ever been playing a game or writing a document which hasn’t been saved in a timely manner? Maybe you were inputting figures into Excel (.xls) worksheet and didn’t save it. Data loss from a sudden electrical problem can be infuriating. While your PC may allow you to recover a document on occasion, in most cases, you will have lost your files.

Damaged USB Drives and Hardware from Electrical Surges.

If you’re to blame, at least you’ll know to take greater care next time. Put it down to experience. Perhaps keep your feet away from the power switches or USB drive ports! What if your device is struck by a power surge? These happen when lightning causes a massive boost in electrical power. Electrical bursts create too much energy for outlets and USB drives or other storage devices to handle. When the flow of electricity to your device is interrupted and started again; or when electricity is sent back into the system for other reasons. Certain plugs, sockets, and adapters feature surge protection. Not all power strips guarantee complete safety.

At eProvided, as data recovery specialists, we often receive computers and devices which have been affected by power surges. Obviously people worry about data in their tablets, microSD’s, smartphones and cellphones, and expect it can be lost forever. In some circumstances hardware can become so damaged it affects the storage components. Generally your data should remain safe. But, did you save your data or photos regularly? The best advice, always have surge protection, and disconnect your computer or plugged-in storage devices during a lightning storm. Smartphones and cellphones can also be damaged while charging due to lighting strikes.

Power Surge, Check for Lost Data and Damaged Hard Drives.

When hard drives and USB drives suffer a power surge, their printed circuit boards are typically damaged. Surges stop hard drives from spinning properly. Sometimes the surge can be strong enough to damage the read/write heads. Newer external USB sticks and flash media drives are effected at the NAND flash level. Controllers that tell the data how to speak to the computer are shorted. As data recovery specialists, we can help save your work no matter which type of device you own and no matter which circumstance it experienced.

If you’re in the middle of saving documents, photos, videos, or other important files when a power surge occurs, they will not be saved properly. Compare it to yourself trying to memorize something only to have a hefty dosage of electricity pumped through you. It’s likely you wont remember much, would you? If you believe your hard drive has received physical damage which may affect storage, or you’re unsure whether the documents have saved properly, the important thing is to avoid booting it yourself. If you do you may make matters worse. How? Switching a physically-damaged hard drive or USB drive on could cause any underlying technical problems to take effect. At this point any lost data could be overwritten.

Recovery Specialists with Innovative Techniques.

Our team of experienced, expert data recovery specialists have extensive knowledge of most types of storage devices. Whatever the model, whatever the problem, we have helped thousands of business and customers worldwide access the files they believed lost. In the event of a power surge, we’ll assess the problem and use whichever techniques we believe work best to ensure a clean, safe recovery.

External Hard Drive Recovery & Portable Hard Drive Data Recovery Solutions at eProvided.Com

Recovering Photos & Data from Portable USB Hard Drives or External Hard Drives.

Tax time, your hard disk is broken, your files are missing. Portable hard drives with USB 2.0, USB 3.0 store documents. You dropped your drive on the floor. You may have bumped it accidentally. Some customers break off USB ports on their disk drives. External hard drive recovery experts at eProvided recover damaged drive files.

Portable USB Hard Drives & Hard Drive Failures.

“My portable drive fell to the floor.” Suffering from damaged portable hard drive failure? Your external storage drives store your pictures. Portable USB disk drives can experience shock, weather issues and salt water damage. One common problem a data recovery company can experience is board damage. Portable hard drive bad circuits or failure to NAND flash memory is common. Drives fail for many reasons.

Formatting Drives by Accident. Common Portable Hard Drive Failures.

Your portable USB drive experiences accidental formatting. You think Disk 0 is Disk 1 in disk management. Targeting the wrong disk? You’ve moved files to the wrong location. You have deleted everything, overwriting your hard drive. Call a professional before data disappears. External hard drive recovery is preventable.

Circuits Fail.

Have a Solid State Drive inside an external enclosure? You connect your SSD to your PC USB port and nothing happens. Knowing the cause of any drive failure is important to retrieving data & photos. Customers tinker and open enclosures improperly. End users discover bad ports or broken connections. It makes it difficult for file recovery specialists.

External Hard Drive Recovery Savings.

When file recovery specialists dig around failed drives. “Customers attempt to fix hard drives. Lead solder is dangerous. Internal circuits become jumbled, it’s difficult. Don’t touch. Celebrating 15 years of experience. eProvided analyses broken USB drives under microscopes to discover what disconnected. This makes recovering lost files and images faster.”

NAND Flash Memory Dumps.

No moving parts. Historically portable devices had spinning platters, these store data. Today’s drives use NAND Flash Memory. Inside each NAND wafer are banks which store data.

External, portable solid state drives fail, data recovery companies target NAND. eProvided removes NAND flash memory from portable USB storage drives. eProvided connects these NAND chips to special machinery. External hard drive recovery experts at eProvided speak. “We dump data banks from NAND wafers to fast SSD PCs”. Storage devices hold 1 – 16 surface mount NAND wafers. Data is extracted from NAND flash memory. We then unscramble the files, analyze the dumps and reassemble the data back into files.

Traditional Drives & SSD Drives.

Retrieval of documents on SSD’s or drives with moving parts is possible. SSD drives suffer circuit failures. Traditional hard drives experience moving part failures. Traditional disk drive platters become damaged or scratched. “eProvided recovers files from portable USB hard drives.” eProvided acts as the lab for portable hard drive retrieval companies. Lower your costs. External hard drive recovery customers can save.

External Hard Drives, Extraction and Retrieval of Data is the Same.

External hard drives Vs. Portable hard drives. Have a USB external drive? These devices are all portable and easily move from one location to another. The more you move a drive the more likely it will experience a problem. Have corrupted or damaged documents?

Causes of Portable Hard Drive Failures.

External USB disks are handy on vacations. Consumers take external storage drives near salt water or high heat and humidity. Salt water corrodes circuits on printed circuit boards. Humidity magnifies your chances at file loss. eProvided and NASA meet. Salt water and external USB drives do not mix. eProvided managed data recover from salt water damage for NASA. When on the go, have a plan before moving your hard drive.

eProvided handles data loss. External hard drive recovery firm eProvided analyzes portable USB drives for free. We use microscopes. We extract NAND wafers to discover what causes external drives to fail. Free evaluations, we agree on solutions and recover images and documents. ‘Simple Fix’ recoveries Vs. ‘Advanced recovery’. Common Problems Leading to Our Successful Thumb Drive Recovery

We have a tendency to break and damage our belongings. In the case of thumb drives and flash drives we have a habit of saving all our images and data for anything we come across. We truly save everything these days. As thumb drives become less costly and store huge amounts of data, we forget the consequences of damage. Recovering lost data from our flash drives is no laughing matter. So what tends to go wrong?

Actual customer testimonials, why customers lose data on thumb drives.

What causes customers to lose data on thumb drives.

Recovering Thumb Drive Photos & Data for the Faint at Heart

In this story we will go in exact order of the most recent cases that have come into eProvided. We will discuss only those cases that relate to lost files or damaged thumb drives, skipping cases such as microSD, SSD, cell phones etc. After each customer quote we will go behind the scenes to let you know the success of eProvided recovering the files for each case. We will also list what specifically the customer feels is important to have retrieved to consider this a success.

Recovery Case 1) Thumb Drives that Quit.

We will go into a detailed explanation on this first case to help you understand our advanced thumb drive recovery process. What the customer filled out when submitting this case online, anyone can submit a case here: “My thumb drive just quit reading. I need back primarily documents, PDF’s, etc., everything possible” – You might have to see it to believe it, thumb drives can suddenly just stop working for no reason, without any warning. eProvided.Com analyzed this drive in our lab using a high powered microscope and found that the circuits had failed. Many times the crystals or very tiny fuses blow due to bad workmanship issues.

eProvided acts as the lab for many of the leading file recovery companies around the globe. In cases like this we usually pull the NAND flash wafers from the USB drive and connect them to specialized equipment. In short we dump the banks (from within each NAND chip) out to a RAID 00 SSD based PC’s. Usually there is either 1, 2 or 4 banks on each NAND wafer. Each storage device holds anywhere from 1 – 16 NAND wafers. Once the data is extracted from the NAND flash chips we then unscramble the algorithm from these data sets, reassemble the data sets and turn the data back into the original customer folder and file structure.

You may ask, why would a thumb drive just stop working? Data workmanship issues are the leading cause, what eProvided finds as the second most common cause of data loss when thumb drives just stop functioning is due to bending the tip of the USB drive without your knowledge.

Recovery Case 2) – Thumb Drives Not Recognized.

“My computer will not recognize my USB device. I need all my photos back” – One day you have your stuff, the next you don’t. You’ve got to love modern technology. In comparison to ‘Case 1’ the difference is that some thumb drives fail during actual movement of data. In this case we can explore how thumb drives can break from one day to the next. The leading cause is usually heat, moisture, salt water, or the dog ate my homework, in this case your storage device.

Take into consideration, your drive is finicky. Did you visit the beach, took a swim, dried off, did some work under the sun? Maybe on vacation, and then plopped your thumb drive back into your pants which are still damp? Salt water is a killer, the evaporation can infect your drive. Salt water can work it’s way inside the heart of your thumb drive. Corrosion sets in fast under wet, humid conditions where high temperatures present.

Is such cases eProvided will take your drive into a lab, check the drive under a microscope and determine the cause of failure. We will remove the NAND wafers as mentioned above or find a common cause of failure in order to extract and recover all your lost or damaged files. Most cases require either ‘simple fix’ recoveries or ‘advanced recoveries’. Simple fix recoveries take 1 hour or less, advanced recoveries require two (or up to ten or more) working hours by eProvided data recovery specialists.

In our next article we will discuss a few more cases and give you a behind the scenes approach to eProvided and how thumb drive recovery cases are solved.

SP’S Brand New, Super-Fast USB 3.0 Flash Drive

We get excited whenever new storage options hit the market. For example, Silicone Power’s super-fast USB 3.0 flash drive. Specifically, the Mobile X31!

Explore this new storage drive, and the benefits of Super-Speed USB 3.0.

Super Fast Flash Drive Basics

To begin with, let’s summarize the X31. This boasts a dual-interface, a micro-USB and a USB 3.0 connector. This provides all the capabilities of standard USB flash drives, memory cards. Second, USB cables are utilized for an unparalleled all around solid storage drive. The X31 features a 360-degree swivel cap. And, dimensions small enough to insert with a simple push. Thus, this has fast data-transfers, is user friendly, and provides expanded storage.

Faster USB, Fast Flash Drive Transfer.

The SP Mobile X31 is designed to meet the needs of today’s average user. And, provides a means to transfer data between smartphones and tablets. Namely, todays transfer speeds remains an issue for storage. When handling large files, the X31 uses a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface. Specifically, this shortens the time to transfer data. Equally, this ensures photographers and students spend less time transferring data between laptops and tablets.

Unbeatable Design.

To ensure an enhanced user-experience, the X31 features the 360-degree swivel cap. This design protects the USB/microUSB flash drive port connector when not in use. Therefore, it’s a significant benefit for clumsy types. This enables users to activate the drive by the push of the thumb. Therefore, it negates concerns about losing its cap. The top of the drive swings to the bottom, exposing the USB connector.  In contrast, most USB sticks come packaged with small caps that are easy to misplace.

Thanks to SP’s decision to combine metal and plastic, the X31 features a robust build that boosts its physical safety. Many customers over the years have broken USB drives by dropping them onto concrete or stepping on them by accident. These new products will keep data secure. Also included, a feature referred to as COB (Chip on Board) technology. Chip on board protects the components from vibration.

Storage Capacity.

Flash drive capacity, it’s the most important aspect of any USB drive, and the X31 delivers. Available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32 GB, this is backed by a lifetime warranty – users should get all the storage and speedy data transfers they need. When shopping around for faster flash drives, be sure to consider both speed and volume. Many consumers find themselves with just a bit too little space to save everything they have.

Much of our lives are spent on computers, smartphones and tablets; having enough storage is a huge concern. Secure your pictures, documents, videos and music, whether at home or at work. Including a lifetime warranty, users will feel confident transferring data from one device to another. Remember to register your drive on their website.

At eProvided advanced data recovery, we want to know what you think. Have you used the Mobile X31? What did you think? Does the swivel-cap offer an improvement in performance and functionality? Do the various storage capacities meet your needs?

eProvided.Com provides guidance related to damaged usb flash drives and any other data recovery issues. Call eProvided toll-free 1-866-857-5950, we’ll be happy to discuss your needs.

Exploring 4K Video: Storage and Device Compatibility

For anyone fascinated by video technology, the evolution of 4K resolution has been an immensely exciting process. With 4K cameras now available (but expensive – prices can vary from below $1000 to $3000+), those looking to capture scenes in the crispest, sharpest resolution can. Watching videos filmed in this format is very impressive, and for professional film-makers, the temptation to upgrade must be great. However, what about storing this data? Given the amount of pixels, the amount of space 4K videos are set to consume on hard drives is a steep increase over standard-definition video files (as we’ll discuss below). Before you start using 4K video yourself, you need to ensure you have the right equipment to help get the most out of it – and sufficient storage is key.

At eProvided, data storage and file recovery is our specialty – we help people just like you get vital images, files, and documents back, no matter how damaged a device may appear. The potential 4K offers is, of course, hugely significant, so we’ve decided to take a look at its storage requirements and the devices best-suited to keeping it safe. Read on and enjoy!

Storing your 4K Videos.

The greater the resolution of a video, the more storage space it will need. So, while the picture itself will look beautiful, the size of the file will be significantly bigger than those at lower resolutions (such as 1920 x 1080, for example is standard television size): to give you more of an idea, an hour of 4K footage will demand somewhere in the region of 110GB worth of storage, whereas one hour of standard digital footage takes up little more than 12GB. Quite a difference, isn’t it?

So, what does this mean on a practical level? Ideally, to accommodate such massive data capacities, you’ll need to invest in hard drives far bigger than any you may be using at the moment. Hard drives providing multiple terabytes’ worth of storage are widely available, but to store a collection of videos – for editing, for your own viewing etc. – you’ll need to make sure you have more than enough space to play with: you want to avoid overloading your drives. In September 2014, Western Digital announced the world’s first 10TB hard drive, but these may not be suited to everyone’s budget; if you need to watch your finances, hard drives offering anywhere from 1TB to 8TB are easy to find online, at decent prices.

Hard Drives.

To make the most of your 4K video, you may want to use your large-capacity hard drive purely for this media – keep any important documents or other files separate, on an additional storage device. In the event of your hard drive sustaining any damage, you may feel panicked – is your footage gone, lost forever? Some people may even discard their disk drive as soon as an accident happens, assuming their data to be irretrievable. However, this is often a massive mistake – just because a storage device appears damaged doesn’t mean its internal components are ruined.

Which Storage Devices can we Recover Data from?

Nowadays, it seems as if new and different devices are hitting the market every day, and with these come enhanced storage facilities. At eProvided, we work hard to stay familiar with all storage devices, to ensure clients receive the most professional service every time. We can save data from broken USBs, NAND chips, damaged camera cards and corrupted hard drives. eProvided is currently breaking ground with many methods of retrieving data from monolithic drives (otherwise known as monolith drive recovery). These devices can be damaged easily and quickly, without even realising – a USB flash drive may break in your pocket or if dropped to the floor, or a hard drive may be damaged if tipped over.

A file recovery partnership with eProvided saves you time!

Most consumers will throw their storage drives away. If they drop them, have a shattered USB or a cracked hard drive, they believe their data is lost. This is a huge mistake. In brief, simply tossing these into the trash may mean others can scavenge your data. Also, this leaves you without the files you may need for later. You should always be prepared to retrieve it, at the very least. Our data recovery experts will use various techniques to retrieve your files – give us a call to learn more! 1-866-857-5950.

MicroSD Card Speeds And The Competition

To illustrate, microSD card speed using ‘The Tortoise And The Hare’. A fable most of us know by heart. And if we don’t know the story, then we at least know the lesson. The tortious appeared slow, but he was steady. The hare was fast, but he wasn’t consistent. In the end, the tortoise won the race because he didn’t slack off like the hare. It was a life lesson illustrating the payoff of persistence and consistency versus the consequences of slacking off and underestimating.

microSD Card Speed, The Tortoise and The Hare.

The market today is populated with numerous microSD cards, all clocked at various speeds. Most consumers look at these memory cards and feel like they’re reliving The Tortoise And The Hare, but the question is whether or not faster really is better when it comes to these handy flash storage devices?

The Choice of Performance.

Different types of flash memory are used by different manufacturers to create SD memory cards. Therefore, the actual transfer speed of each card by each manufacturer can vary. As a result, it’s difficult to determine which microSD cards will provide reliable speeds.

Most SD cards are used in mobile devices ranging from cell phones to handheld video recorders and digital cameras. The speed of a card becomes particularly important when taking video because it affects the smoothness of the playback. When picking a microSD card, the speed of the card you choose is your choice of performance.

microSD Card Speed Classes.

Higher isn’t always better. According to the SD Association, speed classes designate the minimum writing performance. They have identified seven speed classes:

  • Class 2 Speed Class
  • Class 4 Speed Class
  • Class 6 Speed Class
  • Class 8 Speed Class
  • Class 10 Speed Class
  • Class 1 UHS Speed Class
  • Class 3 UHS Speed Class

When looking at microSD card speed and the competition, the first question you need to ask yourself when it comes to speed is how much you’ll need. Certain file types, such as HD videos, require a minimum writing speed to guarantee smooth video playback.

Each class roughly corresponds to the minimum writing speed of the card in MB/s (megabytes per second). Therefore, a Class 2 microSD memory card has a minimum writing speed of 2MB/s, a Class 4 has a minimum writing speed of 4MB/s, etc. HD videos require a minimum of a Class 4 card.

Compatibility Is Important.

When choosing a microSD card, compatibility is vital to consider. Not all SD cards work across all devices, and it’s important to consider the BUS speed of the device you’ll be interfacing the SD card with. Why? Because your microSD card could be “insta-fast,” but if the BUS of the device you’re interfacing with can’t keep up, all of that super speed is wasted.

The standard SD card is slower than the SDHC and SDXC cards. The SDXC offers the highest speeds and the lowest compatibility. The SD card is the slowest but most widely compatible card, followed closely by the SDHC & SDXC. it is best to use faster microSD cards. Above all, slower SD cards can become overheated and fail. In the event they do fail, eProvided will recover lost data on your microSd card.

Why microSD Card Speed is Crucial.

At the end of the fable, it wasn’t speed that won the race for the tortoise; it was consistency. When it comes to SD cards, speed is important to a degree. The faster the file transfer speed, the less risk there is of corruption or malfunction. However, the importance requires a balance. Your file transfer speed will only be as fast as the slowest BUS speed. When choosing your microSD card, be sure to choose the one that is most consistent with your devices. It will provide the best possible interface, ensuring you’re not too fast or too slow, but running at just the right speed to win your data race.
