Encrypted Device Vulnerability

Encrypted Device USB Flash Drive Vulnerability Problem.

Encrypted Device, USB.Just Recently, news was released that some Encrypted USB Flash Drive storage drives have a loop hole within their encrypting feature. Truly, encrypted device security remains important today.

There are quite a few companies and individuals out there that use thumb drives equipped with encryption capabilities. Companies use encrypted USB thumb drives to secure sensitive or private data. This is a sensible idea as there have been far too many instances of Storage Devices being lost containing confidential personal and business data. Even our own military uses secret plans for troop movement which is a lot of times stored in portable USB storage units. Thus, having a flash drive that automatically encrypts your data is a good idea. In like fashion, if you lose your USB Drive, identity thieves won’t be able to do anything with your personal information. Your secret info is unless if they don’t have your password to unlock the secure drive.

Is Encrypted Storage a Default on Your Flash Drive?

Be cautious, Sandisk sells many top end USB drives. In fact, they don’t always tell you your drive’s encrypted. So where can this be a problem? In truth, you might store all your photos on a Sandisk USB drive. If it’s encrypted and you did not know, and later it fails, your data’s lost for good. USB drive manufacturers need to tell you that you have an encrypted USB drive. In addition, if your USB flash drive breaks, data recovery service companies might not be able to get around the encryption. Above all, know what you as a consumer have purchased.

Encryption Procedures on USB Drives.

One issue with these devices, stated by SanDisk, there is a flaw in their encryption procedure. Basically, some versions of their Cruzer Enterprise flash drives contain a vulnerability. And, it could allow unauthorized individuals to access encrypted data on your USB stick. SanDisk made sure to point out, the flaw was not within their drive’s hardware or firmware. In fact, it’s in the code that accompanies the drive and runs on the user’s computer. Encrypted device security issues are real people.

Kingston Technology had a similar security flaw within their devices (based upon the same vulnerability). They released a Security Bulletin regarding a potential threat from hackers. And, this threat allows a hacker to access encrypted data on USB drives. Kingston’s Bulletin didn’t provide much information other than to advise affected customers to contact Kingston’s Technical Support. However, one thing that this Bulletin did explain, was that a “skilled person” with the proper tools and access to the drives might be able to gain access to encrypted data”.

Frankly, it’s pretty unfortunate that these so-called secure and encrypted devices are at risk. The vulnerability of this type of attack is real.

How to Spot Storage Drive Recovery Symptoms

USB Flash Drive File Loss, It’s No Laughing Matter at All.

A damaged or nonfunctional flash storage drive is no picnic. USB flash drive data loss or hard drive damages happen. We use these handy little devices repetitively for transferring files between computers and sharing information with colleagues. Unfortunately, as is the case with any storage device, the device and media on the drive can become corrupt, damaged or suffer from a broken USB port or PCB. If this happens, you may need the assistance of a trained professional capable of performing USB flash drive data recovery services. Let’s prepare, know what to expect before it happens to you.

USB Flash Drive Data Loss, Data Recovery Solutions and Preparing for Disaster.

Know when you are about to have a data loss disaster, in advance.

Do you know how to spot the symptoms of a drive in need of recovery assistance? Believe it or not, there are some universal issues that should immediately indicate the need for drive recovery, but if you don’t know them, they can be easy to miss.

Common Device Issues to Watch For.

USB flash drives are one of the most preferred types of media storage devices when transferring small files. They are fast and capable of holding a large capacity in comparison to other portable media. With consistent use, these drives are susceptible to one of the most common storage drive recovery symptoms:  the drive can become broken or bent, especially at the port. Since this issue can happen instantly from an action as simple as removing the drive from the port, you can suddenly find yourself unable to pull needed files off of your device.  Most of the cases eProvided has seen arrive are broken USB sticks on laptops from a knee jerk reaction so to speak.

Other common device issues to watch for include:

  • The drive, when plugged in, will no longer appear as a drive letter in the computer’s explorer program.
  • Many flash-based storage drives, including hard drives, will suffer from symptoms where, when plugged in, your operating system displays the message, “Drive not formatted. Do you want to format now?”
  • Deleted data that you cannot recover.
  • Lost files due to corruption of the data structure of the storage device.

Avoiding USB Flash Drive Data Loss.

As is the case with all storage devices, the best way to avoid a disastrous loss of data is to frequently back-up all of your important data and files. By frequently backing-up your files, you can mitigate overall loss in the event of an unexpected corruption or device damage.

Flash memory technology has limitations, which is why such flash drives are not recommended for frequent file updates and transfers. However, it is important to use reliable flash memory, such as SLC flash, for important applications and critical data.

Another tip for avoiding data loss is to always ensure careful and safe removal of the flash media device. Never unplug the drive while it is reading or writing. Improper removal can lead to corrupt data, and data recovery may be your only option for retrieving the data.

Finally, remember that proper storage is crucial. Your flash storage device should never be exposed to extreme temperatures, humidity, or pressure; such factors risk shortening the lifespan of the flash memory storage significantly.

When Data Recovery Is Needed.

What if you’ve implemented all of the preventative measures and backed-up your files as frequently as possible? It’s still possible to lose data, even with the most pristine habits and upkeep. No storage device is perfect. An unexpected file corruption problem can happen at any time. A simple office accident, like spilling a cup of coffee, can also cause sudden, permanent damage to any type storage device. In this event, you will need the assistance of a trained data recovery specialist.

In order to have the best chance at recovering the most amounts of data, the recovery specialist will need an account of how the device came to be damaged or corrupt. Be sure to reiterate any symptoms that lead up to the device issue. Together, you and your recovery expert will be able to pick the best method for attempting to recover as much data as possible.

Top Five Reasons For Camera Card Data Corruption, How To Recover Files.

Camera Cards, The Top Reasons They Suffer from Data Corruption.

Camera Cards, The Top Five Reasons they Fail, Leading to File Loss.

Summer And Winter can be a time of fun and spending time with family and friends, however, both seasons can also be hazardous to the health of your SD and Digital Media cards unless you exercise good care habits. It is no fun to lose those wonderful shots that you worked so hard to get, yet it happens to someone, somewhere, just about every day. Here are some tips on how to avoid digital camera data loss and what to do should it happen to you. The top five reasons for losing your data are as follows.

Summer Humidity Water and Sun.

This summer, the number one cause of loss of data in your SD card, MicroSD, smartphone, camera card and flash drives will be exposure to the sun or water. Don’t leave electronic equipment in the sun or exposed to high humidity or moisture. Keep your camera and laptops away from swimming pools and in a shady place when they are outdoors with you. Should you discover data loss, do not panic. Even reformatted or erased data can still be recovered.

Winter, Cold Temperature and Moisture.

Some cameras and other file storage device producers have wizened up and made their devices winter proof. You have to check your users manual to know how to properly use your device. The winter is harder on your device than summer. An example , dropping your device in the snow or using it during freezing temperature. Data corruption can still be recoverable despite the damage.

Not Reading the Manual For Your Device.

Many people begin playing with their camera without reading the user manual and soon after suffer data loss. If you reformat your camera card with your data on it you can recover those images as long as you don’t re-write over them by taking more pictures. Accidentally deleting images is a mistake people make by not familiarizing themselves with their camera. Forcing the SD card into the slot the wrong way is bad for both the camera and the memory card. You can drop your camera in a washing machine and still have the opportunity to recover your images. It’s never too late to contact a recovery professional.

Camera Card Data Recovery Software.

If you see one of these advertisements, steer clear. One of the top ways of losing precious photos taken during a family get together is trying to recover the images using online recovery software. You just never know what you are going to get when you download files from an unknown and untrustworthy website. These download sites includes identity theft software with pages posing as legitimate businesses. They all look and sound legitimate. Once you download them on your computer you might suffer file damage. Using unfamiliar software on your PC or tablet can cause harm. The best advice, leave it to the professionals. Protect and avoid software which may corrupt your camera card. Have questions? Contact eProvided Toll Free 1-866-857-5950.

Operation of Camera and Low Battery Life.

Low battery operation on digital cameras can cause photo corruption & damage. It is akin to pulling the card from the reader during the transfer of images. Always check your battery before beginning any data transfers with your digital data-capturing device.

Testimonial / Story from NAND Flash Recovery Client

For many, NAND flash memory is a better storage device—especially in low-capacity application (4 GBs or less). NAND is a no-brainer for folks seeking a lower power, lighter, and more robust storage device. Although these devices have marked advantages, they can easily become corrupt due to external environmental components, as one of our clients recently found out at a most inopportune time.  (For digital image recovery information, click here.) Thankfully, they wasted no time in enlisting our recovery services. Here’s what they had to say.

Saving Precious Memories. A Firsthand Account from a Data Recovery Client.

NAND Flash Recovery - Costa Rica

During my incredible, amazing, and absolutely PERFECT honeymoon in Costa Rica last December, my husband and I were spending our last day in heaven-on-earth at the beach with our waterproof camera. When we got out of the water, my husband held up the camera. We were mortified as sand and water began pouring out! I thought for sure we had just lost all of our wonderful pictures, and all on the last day of what was the perfect memory. I was crushed.

When we arrived back home in San Diego, CA, I removed the SD card, which was obviously quite damaged. I took the card to two different camera and image recovery stores in the area, but had no luck finding any data recovery assistance. I wasn’t about to give up and lose our honeymoon pictures! There just had to be someone out there with enough experience and persistence to help.

I decided to try a different plan of attack. Instead of staying local, I got online and googled “SD card recovery companies.” The first company to come up was eProvided. As I searched through reviews, I read one positive story after another about this company, and all of the reviews held personal success stories from satisfied customers. I read so many stories, and they were all very similar; eProvided had recovered all of the images in every review. I was sold, but the main reason I decided to send our SD card to them was the continued mention of their updates and communication with their customers. I knew my SD card would be in goods with people who would let me know exactly what was going on from start to finish. These sounded like people who would care, and that was important to me.

I mailed my SD card that day! I was constantly receiving emails with updates, which made me very happy. I was contacted by a very, very friendly, professional, and personable man who called to let me know the SD card was too damaged. Just when I thought there was no hope, he offered a new option: a more intensive recovery attempt, which would require our SD Card to be sent to the lab.

Let’s just say that this amazing human being listened to my story, was genuinely invested in helping me as much as possible, and helped make us some of the happiest people ever. In less than 4 days TOTAL, they have recovered every picture from our honeymoon!

I have never, ever had an experience this amazing with such an amazing company before. I intend on going to every possible website just to rave about my experience and share my review of this amazing company. eProvided is the only reason I have my honeymoon pictures. Without them, all of their help, and everything they did for me, I would have never seen or had the pictures that will capture some of the best times and best memories of my life!

Thank you so much for everything, Bruce. I cannot tell you all how much I appreciate you!

The Dangers of Cell Phone Memory Add-Ons

It seems like we can never have too much storage on our cell phones, which is why memory add-ons are one of the most popular types of technology on the market. However, adding storage via a MicroSD card can present new problems and dangers. For example, would you know what to do if your MicroSD was damaged, unreadable or corrupt?

Cell phone memory

How Memory Add-Ons Get Damaged.

We don’t often think about memory add-ons getting damaged, but it happens. MicroSDHC and MicroSDXC when removed incorrectly causes damage to a cell phone. The devices are small and designed to fit in a specific manner. Making knocking, or dropping them a major concern.

It’s also possible for these micro devices to sustain damage from inside the cell phone. Waterlogged phones overheats and, the memory add-on device might compromise the phone. In freak cases, dropping a phone can jar the add-on and cause corruption. Removing your micro SD card and inserting it into a reader can also cause damage.

If your MicroSD card sustains damage, you will know when attempting to access the files. A failure message will appear, and the device will be unreadable.

Repairing A Damaged Memory Card.

Do you think micro SD  cards are too small to repair in the event of damage? Many people believe this, but they are wrong! It’s true, memory cards are small and data recovery companies will label them unrecoverable. Unrecognized memory cards can become a huge headache. Nevertheless, a damaged MicroSD, SDHC, or SDXC device is recoverable.

eProvided has been working on recovery techniques for memory cards for years. They’ve created cutting edge technology to perform pinouts on MicroSD cards. As a result, accessing data stored on memory devices makes recovery possible.

Why Some Data Recovery Companies Can’t Recover Damaged microSD Cards.

What makes eProvided’s technology unique and cutting edge? For one, not every data recovery company has the expertise to recover information from inside memory devices. When the plastic casing of a damaged microSD card is removed, hairline traces are exposed. These traces transfer data allowing eProvided to pinout the connection.

After years of research, eProvided developed technology to access and tie into these circuits. Once inside, they access and extract the hexadecimal code, then reconstructed into files, photos, and data. This is the original data stored on the damaged microSD memory card.

This data recovery procedure is unique. These procedures are delicate and time consuming. Only a handful of companies in the world have the ability and skill to perform MicroSD card recovery. As a result, many companies can’t and do not offer smartphone microSD recovery services.

Preparing for Cell Phone Memory Card Damage.

Are you one of the millions of people who use cell phone add-on memory devices to store files and photos on your phone? If so, be sure to backup your data. Advances in technology make is easy to perform on a regular basis. Be prepared for memory card corruption or malfunctions. In doing so you’ll limit the amount of data lost in the event of a MicroSD card failure.

Should your Micro SD card sustain damage, be sure to contact a data extraction expert. Give as much information as possible regarding your data loss. Explain how your smartphone memory card sustained damage. The more details you provide, the better the chances at assessing and restoring damaged smartphone data!

When to Use a Flash Drive Recovery Service.

USB Drives & Thumb Drives. Problems Which Lead to Flash Drive Recovery Service.

Flash drives are handy little devices we use in everyday life. They allow us to transfer data between computers with ease. With this in mind, transistor technology improves with time. Therefore, storage capacity and reliability of flash drives increases. These improvements have allowed larger amounts of photos and files to be stored on flash drives. Large quantities of vital data are now at risk if a problem arises. So that, a simple bend or accidental kick will break a USB drive.

Unfortunately, there is no way to make flash drives indestructible. It’s a natural drawback of making a storage device so small. For those cases where your flash drive is badly damaged or corrupted, the use of a flash drive recovery service may be necessary. Below, five examples.

Flash Drive Recovery Service Company Image.

Broken Connectors, Short Circuits & Bent Thumb Drives.

Flash drives get knocked out of their sockets at times. A stray knee or lack of caution by the user can break off the USB connector. As a result of repeated use, the connection can slowly wear out and break. Humid conditions also mirror this effect by creating shorts in the circuit board and separating the components. These connections can be rebuilt and the memory accessed. For instance, the do-it-yourself route is dangerous. Without specialized equipment and training the drive can sustain further damage and data will be lost. Skilled flash drive recovery service professionals know the dangers and possess equipment to recover data. In other words, take it one step at a time. Call a file recovery professional if you must.

Corrupted Data and Overwritten Files on USB Flash Memory.

This is a common problem with flash drives. The data can be corrupted in a variety of ways. If the files on the drive are being accessed or modified by a program when the drive is removed, the data is partially overwritten and cannot be accessed. Sometimes corrupted data is a symptom of a larger problem. Flash memory storage and USB drives can overcome corruption. Both external and internal drives, with the help of an experienced technician, can be sorted out.

Worn Out Flash Memory Sticks and Flash Memory Thumb Drives.

A flash drive’s ability to store data is not permanent. Over time memory in the drive wears out and loses its ability to store data. Only partial files will be available in this case, resulting in corrupted data. Storage in humid conditions can also cause file loss. Humidity damages memory and corrupts data. A flash drive recovery service can correct both and piece together your damaged data.

USB Thumb Drive Device Not Recognized or No Longer Recognized.

A USB device not recognized issue can be caused by improper removal or a flash drive formatted for a different system. A PC will be unable to access the device until the problem is resolved. Be cautious in these situations, as this error can sometimes lead to the next problem.

Reformatted Flash Drive Recovery Service.

When is recovering reformatted data required? Your data is completely missing, although the markers the computer uses to find the data have been shifted. The data is still intact on the drive as long as you do not use it to store more data. A flash drive recovery service routinely handles situations like this and tracks down file references to recover data and restore files. They are lifesavers with such problems, incurable “device not recognized” errors.

All of these problems are preventable with proper backups and care, it’s impossible to avoid all mishaps. There is also no way to make indestructible flash drives or perfectly secure networks.

Preventing Damage, Mitigating Risk & Skilled File Recovery Professionals.

The best answer should one of these problems occur is to contact a professional flash drive recovery service. It’s a recurring theme when discussing these problems for a reason- it’s effective and reliable, with far less risk than simply recovering the data on your own. Professionals know how to mitigate the risks and safely recover data without causing further damage.

What Can go Wrong?

There are many situations that can lead to an iPhone failure. Here are some of the most common:

iPhone Water Damage.

This is one of the more common issues we see at eProvided. Salt water damage to smartphones can really put a damper on your day. Water works its way through the circuitry on your iPhone and causes corrosion. This corrosion leads to connections becoming lost or deteriorated. Brackets and cables become badly damaged due to oxidation. The logic board which stores the most critical parts like the NAND wafers and controller chips usually short circuits. eProvided goes straight to the NAND wafers or these logic boards in order to solve the problem with lost data. iPhone data recovery is possible and a savior in salt water damage situations.

iOS Upgrade Failure.

Many consumers attempt iOS upgrades and fail miserably. One leading cause is due to a ‘Insufficient Storage’, “Stuck on Update Requested’ or ‘Update Failed’ error messages. At this point the user becomes confused and starts deleting crucial files. Prevent data loss, read online guides such as this one you are reading now. Be sure to take your time and do it correctly to avoid losing your files.

My iPhone was Dropped.

Oops, dropping your iPhone causes cracks and dings and data loss. Many times you might be out of warranty or not have insurance on your iPhone or smartphone. When you do not have this protection and have no proper backups you will need assistance from a professional file retrieval service. Worst case scenario, if you need an iPhone data recovery service feel free to contact eProvided.

iPhone Hardware Failure.

Excessive heat on an iPhone (or any smartphone) can cause risk to your files. Be sure to read up on the best ways to prevent overheating of your cellular device. Normal operating temperatures are between 32°F and 96°F. When storing your device, keep the range between -4° and 113°F. Humidity causes data loss, if it’s extreme and constant, five percent to 91 percent is considered normal.

iPhone Jailbreak Failure.

Jail-breaking your iPhone is not a great idea. If you do jail-break your phone and something goes wrong you will need assistance.  Don’t make matters worse, call the iPhone data recovery experts at eProvided.Com. Your simcard might experience problems. You might experience a ‘No Service’ issue. When this happens and you need your data and can’t access any of your important files let eProvided help.

The above scenarios seem catastrophic, however as long as the NAND wafer within the iPhone isn’t damaged, your data still has a chance to be recovered by an expert.

iPhone Data Recovery. Why is an Expert Often Times Needed?

iPhone’s store data using NAND flash memory. In the case that your iPhone fails, a data recovery expert will need to access this NAND flash chip in order to recover the data. If your iPhone turns on but you’re unable to navigate or it freezes, eProvided has solutions available that will help.

Our Experience with Data Recovery Software.

If the data is important to you, it is best to avoid recovery programs and send your device in to an iPhone Data Recovery Expert immediately. Software when incorrectly used, has the potential of doing more harm. Many ‘free’ recovery programs will only allow you to “preview” your recovered files, they’ll charge you to access them. This may cost you more than sending it to a data recovery expert in the first place.

Tips to Avoid Damaging your iPhone.

The iPhone is an extremely durable phone that can handle a lot of abuse. Still, the iPhone does have it’s vulnerabilities and can be damaged, resulting in data loss. Otterbox Smartphone Cases are an excellent way to protect your iPhone from drops, as well as potential water damage. As for hardware failures, they will happen and sometimes for no real rhyme or reason. If you do find yourself in one of these unfortunate situations, reach out to us! We’d love to help!

Common Problems Leading to Our Successful Thumb Drive Recovery

We have a tendency to break and damage our belongings. In the case of thumb drives and flash drives we have a habit of saving all our images and data onto them. We truly save everything these days. As thumb drives become less costly and store huge amounts of data, we forget the consequences of damage. Recovering lost data from our flash drives is no laughing matter. So what tends to go wrong with a flash drive?

Actual customer testimonials, why customers lose data on thumb drives.

What causes customers to lose data on thumb drives.

Recovering Thumb Drive Photos & Data for the Faint at Heart

In this story we will go in exact order of the most recent cases that have come into eProvided. We will discuss only those cases that relate to lost files or damaged thumb drives, skipping cases such as microSD, SSD, cell phones etc. After each customer quote we will go behind the scenes to let you know the success of eProvided recovering the files for each case. We will also list what specifically the customer feels is important to have retrieved to consider this a success.

Recovery Case 1) Thumb Drives that Quit.

We will go into a detailed explanation. On this first case we’ll help you understand our advanced thumb drive recovery process. What the customer filled out when submitting this case online, anyone can submit a case here: “My thumb drive just quit reading. I need back primarily documents, PDF’s, etc., everything possible”. You might have to see it to believe it, thumb drives can suddenly just stop working for no reason, without any warning. eProvided.Com analyzed this drive in our lab using a high powered microscope and found that the circuits had failed. Many times the crystals or very tiny fuses blow due to bad workmanship issues.

eProvided acts as the lab for many of the leading file recovery companies around the globe. In cases like this we usually pull the NAND flash wafers from the USB drive. Then connect them to specialized equipment. In short we dump the banks (from within each NAND chip) out to a RAID 00 SSD based PC’s. Usually there is either 1, 2 or 4 banks on each NAND wafer. Each storage device holds anywhere from 1 – 16 NAND wafers. Once the data is extracted from the NAND flash chips we then unscramble the algorithm from these data sets. After that we reassemble the data sets and turn the data back into the original customer folder and file structure.

You may ask, why would a thumb drive just stop working? Data workmanship issues are the leading cause, what eProvided finds as the second most common cause of data loss when thumb drives just stop functioning is due to bending the tip of the USB drive without your knowledge.

Recovery Case 2) – Thumb Drive Not Recognized.

“My computer will not recognize my USB device. I need all my photos back” – One day you have your stuff, the next you don’t. You’ve got to love modern technology. In comparison to ‘Case 1’ the difference is that some thumb drives fail during actual movement of data. In this case we can explore how thumb drives can break from one day to the next. The leading cause is usually heat, moisture, salt water, or the dog ate my homework, in this case your storage device.

Take into consideration, your drive is finicky. Did you visit the beach, took a swim, dried off, did some work under the sun? Maybe on vacation, and then plopped your thumb drive back into your pants which are still damp? Salt water is a killer, the evaporation can infect your drive. Salt water can work it’s way inside the heart of your thumb drive. Corrosion sets in fast under wet, humid conditions where high temperatures present.

Is such cases eProvided will take your drive into a lab, check the drive under a microscope and determine the cause of failure. We will remove the NAND wafers as mentioned above or find a common cause of failure in order to extract and recover all your lost or damaged files. Most cases require either ‘simple fix’ recoveries or ‘advanced recoveries’. Simple fix recoveries take 1 hour or less, advanced recoveries require two (or up to ten or more) working hours by eProvided data recovery specialists.

10 Tips for Keeping Your Data Safe

Take a moment and ponder this thought. How important is your saved data? If the drive your data is saved to suddenly became corrupt or damaged and you couldn’t access your files, what would you do? If you’re like most people, you’re unconsciously tugging at your neckline or swallowing hard because just the thought of losing your stored data brings butterflies to your stomach. (For Data Recovery information, click here.)

Encrypted-Flash-Drive

It’s within your power to safeguard all your data.  In ten simple tips, here is how:

1: Make backups of important files.

The best ways to backup important files is to write them to a brand new USB flash drive that is only used for backup purposes. Store the flash drives in a safe place, such as a weatherproof steel storage container.

2: Organize your data so you can quickly backup what’s important.

You never know when a device may show warning signs of corruption. By keeping your data organized, you can quickly and easily backup your most important files at the first sign of trouble. Spend the extra time, and money on high speed highly rated storage drives.

3: Research data transfer speeds for your storage device(s); it saves time & allows for faster backups.

Newer storage devices are made with faster data transfer speeds. These devices aren’t getting quicker solely to satisfy our need for speed in a fast-paced world. The faster the data transfers, the less likely there is to be a mishap or corruption.

4: Email yourself backup versions of important documents you just finished creating.

Most of the documents you create are likely less than 25mbs, which is the usual maximum file attachment size permitted via email. It’s unlikely that the Internet or your server-side inbox is going to crash! Take advantage of this dependability. Once you complete a document (or set of documents), attach them in an email and send it to yourself. This is an especially useful technique when you’re dealing with critical files you cannot afford to lose.

Pro Tip: Depending on how confidential the files are, you can also CC them to a partner or assistant for some extra safekeeping. Just remember to eyeball how much space is being used on your email account and downsize as needed.

5: Integrate backup power sources in case of bad weather or unforeseen natural occurrences.

Just because Mother Nature decides to have a bad day, doesn’t mean you need to have one too. In the random event of a power outage or surge, protect your data by using a UPS, or uninterrupted power supply. A UPS will continue generating power so any in-progress file transfers can be completed or a quick backup can be performed.

6: When you plug in your external storage device, such as USB drives or MicroSD cards, be sure they’re not prone to being accidentally kicked or bent.

Many office desks are designed for a computer tower to reside on the floor near legs and feet or behind a door. Make sure the plug-in point for your external device is far enough away that you won’t accidentally kick or nudge the device by something as simple as swiveling your chair. If the tower is behind a closed door, ensure the door is open and secure when using a device. A heavy desk door suddenly slamming shut can irrevocably damage both the device and port. So many times people drop or move laptops with USB drives plugged into the port, avoid this and be very careful, many are bent and damaged and no longer recognized!

7: Use software protection and anti-malware to scan for and remove untrusted software.

We transfer files across devices so often that it’s easy to pick up an unwanted traveler. A virus or malware can wreak havoc on any device and jeopardize your data. Regularly scan all devices for and remove untrusted software to prevent attacks.

8: Don’t place untrusted files onto portable storage drives, such as USBs and external hard drives or SSD drives, this could spread infection.

When in doubt, don’t move it about. It’s a good rule of thumb to live by if you want to keep your data safe. Untrusted files can damage devices and make data recovery tricky. If you’re ever unsure of a file, don’t move it onto any portable storage drive.

9: Store data within systems that allow password protection to prevent theft or attacks.

You never know when something as innocent as inadvertently dropping a USB drive could land it in the hands of someone who decides to snoop. Password protection will keep your data safe and discourage theft and unwanted attacks.

10: Wipe drives using advanced algorithms such as Dod 5220-22.

This is especially important when it comes to sensitive files. The Dod 5220-22 algorithm is a data sanitization method. It will effectively prevent all software-based file recovery methods from lifting information from the drive. It will also prevent most – if not all – hardware-based recovery methods; thus ensuring your data is kept safe and for only the eyes that you choose.

Implementing these tips can save your most precious files when the unexpected transpires. Remember, preparation and organization are key to keeping your data safe.

Everything You Need to Know about iPhone Data Recovery

The iPhone is one of the most popular mobile devices on the market. These phones are incredibly common, and it seems that they are also prone to failure. iPhones store data on NAND flash memory, which is attached directly to the board of the phone internally. If you do not have a backup of your data or contacts, which are the most common file types, then you will need the assistance of a professional iPhone data recovery expert in the event of system failure.

iPhone Data Recovery

Since NAND flash chips are the source of your data, a recovery expert will need direct access to this NAND wafer in order to extract and recover the data. There are many versions of the iPhone, and each version requires a somewhat different approach for safely getting your data back.

Bad Things Happen, You Need iPhone Data Recovery.

Even Mac World admits that sometimes, bad things just happen to good data. It’s akin to being the wrong place at the wrong time, and now you’re left to pick up the pieces—or in this case, recover lost data. Mac World promotes a handy piece of software called Aiseesoft Mac FoneLab. This software is designed to help you easily recover files from an inaccessible or locked iPhone or other Apple device (i.e. iPad or iPod Touch). Using this software, you can:

  • Retrieve and backup approximately nineteen diverse types of data
  • Recover and transfer eight different types of data from the newer iOS device models
  • Restore lost data from an iCloud backup file
  • Get data back from iTunes backup on Mac

CNet.com conducted a review of the iPhone’s data recovery software and found that while the interface is clean and easy to navigate, the software held some notable drawbacks. For example, you can either trial or purchase the software. The trial is limited and only allows you to scan and preview recovered files, not actually recover. In some cases, the cost of the software exceeds the cost of hiring a recovery expert, who might just be your only hope in the event that the NAND flash chip needs to be directly accessed.

Bottom line: Although the software recovery offered by Apple is convenient and capable of recovering an impressive number of files, it may not be best suited to your needs depending on the extent of the damage your iPhone has suffered and whether or not the data was ever backed up.

The Best Choice for iPhone Data Recovery.

When bad things happen to the good data on your iPhone, your best bet is to seek the assistance of a data recovery specialist. They offer the most inclusive recovery methods at the best value. A specialist will able to carefully diagnose and handle any physical damage repair that may be needed. They will also be able to expertly remove any physical piece(s) of the phone needed to promote the best possible data recovery chances.

A specialist is capable of handling both the hardware and software side of data recovery. Not only will they recommend the best possible means of recovering as much data as possible, but they will also be able to quickly adapt in the event that a chosen method is proving less than fruitful.

If you’re searching for the best value, investing in a specialized and experienced third party data recovery service is the best choice. The experts wielding these services will offer the most comprehensive care versus attempting a paid software-based recovery on your own that may or may not address the primary issue impeding successful data retrieval. It is also notable to point out that if a software-based retrieval is incorrectly executed, it can cause more harm than help. Why not trust your valuable data to an expert?

Is it possible to recover a Shattered USB?

While many of us use cloud storage nowadays (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox etc.), USB drives (or flash drives) are still popular. Small enough to fit in your pocket, cheap, and easy to use, these are a dependable form of storage. But what happens if you drop one from height, or accidentally sit or stand on it? Your shattered USB may be ruined. Does this mean all of your data is lost?

Broken and Shattered USB Flash Drives

Broken USB Flash Drive

Not necessarily. There may yet be hope.

Some people make the mistake of assuming otherwise. So don’t toss the drive in the trash. This eliminates any chance of recovering your files. They should check if it’s in working order. No matter what level of damage the shattered USB has taken, it’s worth investigating the chances of getting your data back.

There are two types of damage your USB drive may face: physical, and logical.

USB Drive Physical Damages

Physical damage is easy to spot. If your USB drive is shattered, or the metal USB port connector is broken off, you’ll be unable to connect it to your computer to access files. Instead, you’ll have to try another route. Depending on the level of technical prowess you have, you may be tempted to perform a little DIY operation. But this is best avoided if you want to recover your lost data. Instead, you may want to take it to a professional data recovery firm. Professionals will be able to recover the components and ensure your lost files lives on in another form.

On the other hand, if the shattered USB drive has been broken so severely that the NAND memory chip (visible as a little black silicon wafer) is damaged, then you may need to face the sad fact that your data is lost. However, it’s still worth your time (and expense) to consult a professional group of data-recovery experts – they may still be able to work some magic.

Broken USB or Shattered USB Drive

If your flash drive is broken by such technical problems as file corruption, or it simply doesn’t work without you being able to know why. A recovery service may be able to access your data by fixing the USB controller connections. A USB drive which is physically fine but not working may be fixed by removing its capacitors (outer casing should be taken off). Each file recovery professional will have their own preferred methods.

If your drive is encrypted, then recovering data may be a little more difficult. While your files may be recovered from a shattered USB, a technical failure may make it more difficult. Because of the way in which the data is stored, failures can lead to complex damages.

Data recovery on USB drives is common in the industry. That being said, you should then have access to your files again in no time. Prevention is better than cure. However, make sure your USB drives are safe and secure. If you carry them in a rucksack, or drop them into smaller pockets, avoid leaving them loose with various heavy items or drinks bottles. Liquids could leak causing water damage to your USB drive. Keep them in a zipped pocket (in a coat or your trousers) to prevent them from falling out if you go jogging or are active. Be sure not to confuse your USB drive with your lighter. Keep the drive in a dry area.

Also, embrace cloud storage. Open an account with a reliable provider (check around to find the best choice for you) and back-up your data on a regular basis. Ideally, whenever you make changes to a document, save a copy.

So you’ve Bumped your USB?

Data loss, it’s easily done: you’re working away on a document, immersed in your words or images, lost in your own thoughts; you reach down to scratch an itch on your ankle, or to pick up a dropped pen, and bump the stick with your hand or wrist.

Now, various factors may determine how serious this is.

Need a Data Loss Expert, Have you Broken your USB stick?

Depending on the force with which you struck the USB, you may well have snapped off the port. At first, you may think this is reason enough to accept your data is gone for good, toss the stick away, and start afresh. This is a HUGE MISTAKE. Data loss experts will tell you otherwise. Broken USB sticks can be recovered.

You should always try to retrieve lost files you need, by taking your stick to experts (like us!). In addition, the device may seem damaged beyond repair. Furthermore, data itself may remain safe, even inside a damaged casing. Specifically, eProvided retrieves all data loss. No matter how you damaged your USB stick, eProvided executes such a service.

Have You Bumped the USB Drive While Writing Data?

If you simply knocked your stick while it was sitting in the USB port, without writing data, your saved work should be fine. However, if data was being written when you nudged the stick, you may well have caused issues.

While you can still save your work to the internal hard drive, this may be a problem if working on a computer which isn’t your own, such as at a public library (in these cases, you would be best to email the data to your account, or save it as a draft).

Other Problems Affecting USB Sticks and Data Loss.

Of course, just bumping your USB drive as it sits in your device is not the only problem they can face.

USB Stick Data Losss

USB Stick Data Loss

One key lost data issue, which many of our customers have encountered, is dropping your USB drive. Data loss experts say, depending on your location, and your method of transportation, this can vary in severity: for example, if you’re walking on a carpeted floor, and your drive falls from your pocket, it’s unlikely to experience much damage; however, if you’re standing in the middle of a crowded train carriage, and your drive drops onto a steel floor before being promptly trodden on (perhaps even by yourself), then the damage may be extensive.

Another problem may be a technical fault, without any involvement from yourself – NAND memory flaws, damaged USB ports etc. This may happen with no clear warning or reason, it’s important to avoid using the storage drive. In short, you could make the problem much worse. Lost data due to physical damage is common today.

Three Things You’re Doing That Are Bad For Your Digital Camera

Are you super protective of your digital camera? Regardless of whether your first camera was film or digital, you’re likely more ginger with your digital camera simply because you don’t want to damage it. If you’re not careful, though, you just might be developing some habits that are bad for your camera.

Digital Camera

Digital Camera Bad Habits to Avoid.

The avid photographer is always on the go. With photo-ops all over the place, popping up at any given moment, you always want to be ready. However, there are some “time saving” habits that can cause big problems.

Opting to leave the camera outside of its protective case. It’s easy to stop reinserting your camera into its protective case in favor of keeping it in an easy-to-grab place. Common places a camera ends up include:

  • The kitchen table
  • The passenger or backseat of a car
  • The back of the sofa
  • A coffee table

The problem is that although these places are acceptable to your “time saving” strategy, they are deceptively safe. When the camera is outside of its protective case, it is susceptible to all sorts of possible damage from spills to impacts.

Using a Single Flash Digital Camera Memory Card.

It’s easy to think that a single, sizable flash storage card is all you’ll ever need. However, keeping a single storage card makes it much more likely that you could accidentally overwrite or erase photos you haven’t copied from the card.

Using canned air to clean. It’s easy to grab a can of compressed air and think that it’s the best way to “blow out” the body or lens after a day of outdoor shooting. Resist this urge! According to TechHive.com, canned air can be lethal, especially if you are not exceedingly careful when using it.

Canned air can force air and dust into parts of the camera that are not airtight. As a result, the sensor can become contaminated. If you shake the can prior to using it, you can squirt propellant all over the camera and lens. In some cases, particles on the lens can even leave a scratch when strongly pushed by compressed air.

The best cleaning method for your camera is a good cloth and brush. You should also have it professionally cleaned as needed to remove deeply ingrained dust and particles safely. Call eProvided if experiencing lost data problems.

Forgetting to turn it off can be disastrous. Here’s a bit of advice you don’t hear very often: turn your camera off before you do anything to it. This includes changing lenses, connecting or disconnecting cables, and swapping flash memory cards.

For example, if the camera is on and actively writing to the memory card and you attempt to remove the card, you can ruin the card and possibly lose the images currently stored there. If you were to swap lenses while the camera is on, it’s possible to attract dust to the sensor. Get in the habit of turning your camera off prior to adding or removing anything. Moreover, don’t forget to turn it off when it’s not in use; you’ll save the battery life. For information on digital image recovery.

Camera Habits You Want To Nurture.

Take the time to nurture some good habits, and you’ll safeguard both your devices and the data stored on them. Here are three habits to start keeping:

  1. Keep your digital camera in a protective bag when travelling; in many cases, eProvided recovers data when cameras are knocked around unexpectedly.
  2. Keep track of flash storage cards; know which ones you used for a specific reason or a specific date to prevent deleting the wrong photo or set of photos. Here’s an organizational solution, memory card cases by B&H Photo.
  3. Keep flash storage mediums away from pets, we see many cases where the memory cards are eaten and become damaged or bitten by your dog.

Remember to always protect your digital camera and storage devices. Good protection habits will limit data loss.

Some options outlined below:

1. One option that’s utilized is to go ahead and see if software recovery will recover the lost data.

2. The second option is to take the card apart. Put the SD card under a microscope. Equally important, attempt to fix physical problems such as blown capacitors, circuits or severed connections.

3. The 3rd option focuses on the actual storage chip that is inside of the Card itself. This storage (NAND) chip contains all of the data that has been lost (unless only deleted). eProvided eProvided MicroSD card recovery experts can access the lost data directly by dumping of all of the RAW data from the actual memory chip. Once the data dump finishes, an algorithm will develop and turn all of the RAW hexadecimal data back into the client’s files.

Prevent a Data Recovery Emergency with a Virtual Private Network

Telecommuting is a growing trend in the business world. Permitting employees to work from remote locations can offer substantial cost savings. These savings may come at a price. Having employees logging onto your corporate systems from a variety of locations can increase problems. Companies with wide ranges of devices can open you up to a security breach. One method of reducing this risk is through the use of a Virtual Private Network, or VPN. A network based on this type of framework is smart. VPN’s provide confidence with IT departments. When one is put in place you have a mind at ease. Properly maintained networks streamline workflow. Saving time and preventing problems reduces cost. It also reduces unnecessary technology. Sell the old equipment, upgrade to a more secure workplace.

Virtual Private Networks And Data Storage.

Image of a (VPN), Virtual Private Network.

Unsecured Wi-Fi Connections.

In addition to viruses and other malware, employees may also connect via Wi-Fi through unsecured connections. It seems free Wi-Fi is available everywhere these days. The majority of these locations have huge security holes. Even employees working from home may have their home Wi-Fi router set up without proper security protocols. This puts your confidential business information at risk of being intercepted and stolen. This is a major challenge for companies. Rapid proliferation of different devices and operating systems take place. Thieves may connect to your network. Have a recovery plan. Secure all Wi-Fi Connections.

Protecting Data with a Virtual Private Network.

In addition to antivirus software and other standard security measures, a Virtual Private Network is a low cost method of mitigating the security risks of telecommuting. The VPN protects the data that is being transmitted in both directions. Protect servers and remote employees. It also protects the data they are transmitting. To provide security, the VPN will scramble data moving back and forth. Data moving back and forth will be unrecognizable even if unauthorized parties gets a hold of it. This offers your business valuable protection, even when employees are sending and receiving at public, unsecured access points.

In addition to installing a Virtual Private Network, it’s important to assess or restrict the use of unsecured file sharing programs. Dropbox is our top choice if needed. By setting up the VPN, and a list of unacceptable practices, you’ll go a long way reducing the chance something corrupts your network.

Data Loss Solutions with Proper Data Storage Practices.

Having protocols or protections in place, it’s still possible to experience data loss. You need to have a data recovery plan in place so that critical information isn’t lost. It’s vital to inform telecommuting employees that they should not attempt any data recovery. Your IT department should have a data recovery plan in place. The IT department should have continual access to a company that specializes in data recovery. Regardless, if the loss occurs in your corporate network or remotely, a data recovery expert can help retrieve and restore files with minimum time and data loss. Find a company in business over 10 years. Most companies fail within 5 years. eProvided.Com is now in business over 15 years. Have questions, call us toll free 1-866-857-5950.

Reporting Security Problems To Prevent Data Loss.

It’s important to let employees know the risks associated with telecommuting. It is also vital to encourage them to report any type of security problem or data loss. It comes with the territory. It’s important they know you have procedures in place to recover from data loss emergencies. If you know your place of work is not prepared, tell your CEO. Virtual private network plans are a huge bonus to any data center or workplace. Knowledge from all within the organization is key. A fast response is best. If you see something strange report it. Do not wait for someone else.

Top 5 Quotes from Bruce Cullen

Top 5 Bruce Cullen quotesAs the owner and founder of eProvided data recovery service, Bruce understands the importance of accessing your critical files. He’s worked in the field of data recovery for over 15 years, and he has some top-notch advice for everyone who uses data storage devices.

Learn to use backup systems so that files are located in more than one place.

USB flash drive recovery services or MicroSD card recovery services are needed if they become broken or damaged with little to no warning. What works perfectly today may not tomorrow, which is why backing up your data is so important. Don’t just back up data on the same storage device. Instead, create a copy and move it to a secondary device. Chances are both devices won’t experience issues at the same time.

Regularly backing up your data will save you time and at least some of the headache of data loss. It can limit the amount of data lost due to device damage or file corruption, meaning if data recovery cannot resurrect the lost data then you haven’t lost much.

Purchase drives that are highly recommended, many hard drives today are poorly manufactured.

Devices are in such high demand today that they are produced in bulk. As a result, it is not uncommon for manufacturing standards to slip and device quality to decline. Your best bet is to live by customer reviews. Which devices come highly recommended? Many of these devices may be the same size but other similar drives can be twice as fast at the same cost to GB. Invest in those.

Drive speed is crucial, newer USB or flash memory storage devices are built for faster data transfer speeds.

Get faster memory sticks to prevent files not moving fast enough, this prevents file transfers and data loss. Speed really does matter. When it comes to technology, it’s the hare that wins the race over the tortoise. Newer devices have faster speeds compared to older ones. The faster the data transfer, the less chance there is of a file mishap or data corruption.

What’s the takeaway? Don’t be afraid of newer, faster storage technology. Embrace it!

About PC based systems. What RAID means, buy SSD drives for lightning fast drive speeds.

Your PC will operate in most cases 300% faster. No, we’re not talking about ant spray. When RAID first came on the technology scene, it stood for “redundant array of inexpensive disks.” Today, “inexpensive” has been swapped out for “independent.”

In its simplest terms, RAID is a virtualization technology made to combine multiple disk drive components into a rational unit that will ultimately improve performance. When combined with SSD, or solid-state drives, you will reap the rewards of unbelievably fast drive speeds. As pointed out earlier, faster speeds equate to fewer data mishaps when transferring files from one device to another.

Consumers store data on cell phones. Cell phones that are waterproof like the Samsung Galaxy are a better choice.

It’s a fact. We take our cell phones everywhere. They are the one Internet housing, camera toting, e-mail checking storage device that run nearly our entire lives. We save everything from family snapshots to downloaded e-mail attachments. Some even run apps in which we create entire documents that we then store and transfer to our tablet and/or pc. If you stop and think about how much data is encased in your phone, you’ll likely realize there is a great amount that you would hate to lose.

Protecting your cell phone from mishaps is vital. While a case can go a long ways toward protecting the phone from drops and impacts, it doesn’t do much against technology’s archenemy: water. A waterproof phone just might be the best investment you ever make.
