Every memory card — SD, microSD, or CompactFlash — stores your photos and files on a NAND flash memory chip, managed by a small controller chip that keeps track of where everything lives. Most of what a card “does” when it fails — not mounting, showing a corrupt-card error, or losing file names — comes from the controller losing track of that map, not from damage to the NAND chip itself. That distinction is the reason a card that looks completely dead in a camera can still have every photo physically intact on the chip underneath.
